Waste
Water Treatment
Septic
tanks and leach drains have long been the only available method of waste
treatment in non-sewered areas.
Alternative
Treatment Units are a new type of sewerage treatment using ozone to sterilize
the waste.
ATUs
take all the waste from your house and, through a three-stage process, convert
it to reusable water. This is enormously beneficial both in terms of recycling
water and reducing water demand and in preventing the leaching of pollutants
into groundwater. On average, each household gets back 300,000 litres of Class
A water per year, which is pumped into subsurface irrigation lines.
ATUs are
suitable for use anywhere a septic system would normally be required, and need
little maintenance. Just two visits a year are needed to top up alum and
service the generator.
As all
waste water from the home passes through the system, a minimum irrigation area
of approximately 90m2 is required for a four-bedroom home with sandy soil.
